Breakfast Bites: Bones – The Dwarf in the Dirt

I love Bones. It’s one of my favourite procedurals. Mainly because I love how close the writers are to the characters. Each one has something, no matter how small, that makes them unique, unforgettable, fun. I love the dynamic between the interns and the rest of the cast. I love Booth and Bones and I’m so relieved that Booth is finally admitting he’s in love with Brennan. Yes, I know some people don’t like that, but I’m a sucker for romance.

This week’s murder, a little person who used his size to make money as a midget wrestler is murdered and it’s up to everyone to sift through tons of crap from the collapsed road he was found in. The whole thing about Booth not being able to shoot his gun was just a nice way to clarify to us that Booth may soon be coming out with his big secret of being in love with Brennan. I do hate that we didn’t follow up with Angela, but then again, I love the mystery. I still miss that Angela and Hodgins are not together. Yeah, I’m that fan. What do you think? Is Bones going well or should they just give in, get the Bs together andget it over with.

I think they are making too much of the story about the tension. The dwarf in the dirt seemed to be a 50/50 split, not an substory, and substory is where I want it. I think they should have kept Angela and Hodgins together and let them be the relationship issues for now, while developing the Bones/Booth thing much more slowly. If they really need character romance they could use the other characters in short bursts to supply it. Angela and Hodgins were the couple that could get together and break up and be OK as coworkers with minimal tension. If Bones/Booth get together it will change the dynamic too much, and the writers won’t be able to separate them without killing the show.

I’m wondering if they are delving into the story of Bones and Booth because they know they have at least two seasons to tell that story. Although I’m a big romantic and want to see Bones and Booth together, just because it would be an interesting dynamic when they’re not just flirting with each other or being each other’s best friend, I do agree that Bones and Booth romance should be a substory to their developing work and friend relationship. That is one of the things that makes Bones stand out in the pack of procedurals. I love the revolving interns and I miss Zach. I care about the characters and not just the sometimes very interesting investigation.

I am with you, I just wish they were a little more subtle about it all instead of that “American TV” pound-you-over-the-head & blunt-force-trauma way. I miss Zach as well, and the revolving interns adds to the show greatly. I think this is such a well written show (mostly) and, like many times before, I have high hopes. But I am waiting for the other shoe.
