Breakfast Bites: Supernatural – Swap Meat

Posted on 29 January 2010 by thisgirltv

Swap Meat is just the latest episode in the Supernatural saga that shows you just why you should be watching this show. (Spoilers ahead)

The ep starts out with Sammie in a bar acting extremely weird. Extremely. Regular viewers know something is wrong. When it is revealed who is actually in Sam’s body, it makes sense. We are taken to a few days before where we find out what the guys are hunting (a witch) and we meet the boy who eventually switches with Sam.

As the story unfolds, I’m expecting this to be a slightly humorous “boy in a man’s body” or “Freaky Friday” story, but it turns out, there is a bounty on Dean’s head and the swap was a deliberate way for the kids to get the reward from killing Sam.

But, as we Supernatural faithfuls know, a deal with a demon is no deal at all. The possibility of the kid giving Sam’s body to the Devil was there and we realize that it wouldn’t take much for something like this to put all the power in Satan’s hand. I do think they could have done a little more at the kid’s house with the transplanted Sam. I also think it took Dean a little too long to figure out that it wasn’t Sammie in Sammie’s body. Excellent story otherwise, especially the witchy kids twist.

I like these kinds of stories in Supernatural because it shows us just how much we know the characters. I also like that it still touched on the mythology of the current season and didn’t just become the formulaic comedic body swap story. This story also prepares you for next week’s episode, where the demons try to kill the parents before they give birth to the sons. (Wonder why it’s taken them so long to come up with that one???)
