Farrah Fawcett: Goodnight Angel

Posted on 26 June 2009 by thisgirltv

farrah_fawcettI don’t really know much about Farrah Fawcett but I know two things: she was a very beautiful woman and her show made it really hard for me to be friends with anyone named Charles. Long story.

I don’t usually do death. I offer up a eulogy of sorts for the fallen tv comrades whose death affected me. There is no true pattern and sometimes the eulogy will be a joke, but I got to see Fawcett’s struggle and after watching my someone struggle with cancer, all I can say is that I was affected.

When I was a teenager, I wanted Farrah hair. Up until I reached old age, I had a body built like a stork, all legs and arms and knees and elbows, so I gave up on having a body like hers. I came to Charlie’s Angels kind of late, not only because I am a lot younger than I feel, but also because I wasn’t allowed to watch television until I was 13. I was more of a Kate Jackson fan because of Scarecrow and Mrs. King (yes, I saw that one first), but grew to like Fawcett the more I watched. I was very disappointed when her character was replaced by Cheryl Ladd (no offense to Ms. Ladd).7e5bb716-a303-4965-b44d-d35b59a3b7banewsaporg_t350

I’m pretty sure I had no other connection with her (although I did see the Johnny Bravo where she got into voice acting), but I think the Charlie’s Angels character shines through. Even if Charlie’s Angels is all you know of her, you still feel some sort of connection, and loss because of that connection, in her death. So as I watched her struggle (there’s a documentary) and the false alarms when the doctors said she was getting better only to have it reverse, the news of her death was not what I was hoping today would bring.

Farrah Fawcett was a beautiful woman on the outside and seemed to be one on the inside as well. I’m sorry we don’t get the pleasure of watching Fawcett walk down the aisle with Ryan O’Neal. I’m sure he’s sorry too.

Oh, yeah, and Michael Jackson died too.

Dom DeLuise (and a Part of My Youth) Just Died

Posted on 08 May 2009 by thisgirltv

deluisehistoryDom DeLuise had a distinctive voice. If you watched any cartoon from the 90s that featured animals, you heard his voice. All Dogs Go to Heaven, The Secrets of Nimh, An American Tail, Oliver & Company – all had the voice of Dom DeLuise. Before that, I saw him on TBS with Burt Reynolds (Smokey & the Bandit, Best Little Whorehouse in Texas) and in Mel Brooks films, most notably Blazing Saddles and Spaceballs.

These films represent a majority of my television watching youth. When I first started watching, I couldn’t ever remember what Dom’s last name was. So once I heard Dom Perignon and thought that was it. For two years, I mistook one of the most expensive champagnes for a very funny man.

Remembering DeLuise’s body of work reminds me just how much I love to laugh and that is something for which I will forever be thankful. Dom DeLuise passed away peacefully in his sleep on May 4 after a long battle with cancer. Rest in Peace, Dom DeLuise. Rest in peace.
